Matvey Levenstein’s third exhibition at the gallery focuses on landscapes and still-lives painted in and around his studio on the northern shores of Long Island.

Levenstein’s calm and meditative paintings of intimate and familiar subjects combine exceptional technical skills with a profound knowledge of traditional oil painting techniques. These tender images, some of which take years to complete, look towards precedents like Chardin and Morandi in their use of everyday objects or landscapes as a metaphor for eternal human concerns.

Levenstein was born in Moscow, and after a brief period in Rome and Vienna, his family settled in the USA, where he studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at Yale University School of Art.
