Michael Williams alla Perugi artecontemporanea a Padova

La Perugi artecontemporanea è orgogliosa di presentare la prima personale europea del giovane artista americano Michael Williams ( a seguire una personale in Danimarca presso la galleria Christine Wilson di Copenaghen).

Williams è indicato dalla critica americana come uno dei capostipiti del New Folk. Il New Yorker poi ha scritto di lui, definendolo come una sorta di neo impressionista proiettato verso il futuro (con aspetti anche un poco allucinogeni). In realtà Williams si dimostra completamente avulso da una qualsiasi etichetta preconfezionata. La sua ironia, le sue immagini volutamente sporche, i suoi colori acidi e le sue ambientazioni a metà tra l’assurdo e l’incubo da “scorpacciata di funghi allucinogeni” ne fanno un caso a se.
La mostra da Perugi, dal titolo “Wood”, si differenza dalle precedenti in quanto vengono presentate opere connotate da una totale assenza dell’elemento umano. In passato infatti Williams esprimeva una visione non radical della vita mischiando elementi “naturali” (grande amore per l’habitat delle caverne) a contaminazioni e icone di oggi (come lattine di birra in ambiti preistorici o un ripetuto uso dell’immagine di computers). La mostra sarà composta da due grandi lavori e alcune tele di media dimensione.
Michael Williams, nato nel 1979, vive e lavora a Providence ma il suo percoso artistico è essenzialmente legato a New York (lavora con la galleria Canada). Pittore ma anche artista a tutto tondo. Famose le sue performance nella Deitch Project e al Moma di NY (2007) o i suoi strampalati ed ironici video.

Perugi artecontemporanea is proud to present the first European solo show of the young American artist Michael Williams (to be followed by a solo show in Denmark later in the year at the Christine Wilson gallery in Copenhagen).

Williams has been celebrated in the American press as one of the key figures of New Folk. The New Yorker described him as a kind of neo impressionist reaching for the future (with aspects which are also a little hallucinogenic). Williams himself is reluctant to accept any pre-determined label. His irony, his deliberately dirty images, his acidic colours and his settings somewhere between the absurd and the nightmare of “too many magic mushrooms” are all quite unique.
“Wood”, the show at Perugi, is different from previous exhibitions. Here none of the works contain any trace of the human element. In the past Williams expressed a non-radical vision of life, mixing “natural” elements (a great love for cave habitats) with the juxtaposition of modern icons (like beer cans in prehistoric environments or a repeated use of the image of computers). The exhibition consists of two large-scale canvases and a number of medium sized works.
Michael Williams was born in 1979 and lives and works in Providence, but his artistic career is intimately tied to New York (he works with the Canada gallery). He is a painter, but has also worked in other media, and he is well remembered for his performances at Deitch Project and Moma in NY (2007) and his outlandish and ironic videos.
