Not too bad. Collettiva da Perugi a Padova

Così è la vita (buffa e incasinata). Non sempre (ma quasi).

Ti affanni, corri, sudi, fai progetti, sgobbi e “ mai che le cose vadano per il loro verso giusto” (come diceva Walter Matthau nel primo film di Elaine May). Talvolta c’è proprio la necessità di fermarsi a soppesare un poco il tutto.
Beh, per una galleria è lo stesso. Anni fa con Guido Bartorelli abbiamo fatto una mostra per chiarirci il percorso da intraprendere di lì a poco. Così è nata NOT TOO BAD. Parecchio di quello che poi è successo (nel bene e nel male) parte proprio da allora.
Ora sembra sia tornata la necessità di sedersi per rifiatare (e dare un poco di coca cola a lingua e cervello). Insomma potremmo definirlo il momento dove, sudato e impolverato, ti siedi lungo la strada a capirci su qualcosa (devo andare di qua o di la?). Ho voluto così chiamare questa mostra NOT TOO BAD (again).
La cartolina di allora era dedicata a Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Anche per questa post card non poteva essere diversamente. In fin dei conti credo che una galleria (una vera) dovrebbe proprio essere come loro.
Sempre fuori dalle righe del potere. Sempre uguali per essere sempre diversi. La ricerca “continua” non è forse questo? non è forse il massimo della trasgressione? e chi più di loro immedesima meglio tale concetto (senza per altro allontanare elitariamente la gente). Pochi ci hanno riflettuto sopra per benino (forse solo lo splendido Osvaldo Soriano di “triste solitario y final”). Loro dormivano insieme in pieno codice Hays (nello stesso letto come marito e moglie e talvolta in scena si scambiavano il ruolo per davvero – Stan moglie donna con Oliver marito uomo e viceversa-); mettevano sistematicamente alla berlina i poliziotti e i potenti, talvolta picchiandoli pure, (avete presente James Finalyson ? l’omino strabico con baffi e cilindro) ; distruggevano meticolosamente la proprietà privata, cioè la certezza base dell’american way life. Ricordate ? un quartierino di casette bianche in legno, tutte così perfettine con giardini perfettini con padroni perfettini affacciati compiaciuti a finestre tutte infiorettate ….. e poi arrivavano loro in salopette, con scala, sega, martello e chiodi. E poco dopo nulla era più come prima.

Se solo potessimo essere un poco come loro ……..

That’s life (funny and messed up). Not always (but most of the time)

No matter how much you stress, run around, sweat, make plans and work hard, “thing never go right” (as Walter Matthau says in his first film with Elaine May). Sometimes you just have to stop and weigh it all up.
Well, it’s the same for a gallery. Years ago, with Guido Bartorelli, we had a show to consider the path we were going to take. Thus was born NOT TOO BAD. A lot of that which has happened since (for good or bad) comes directly from this show.
Now it looks like it’s time to stop for a second and get our breath back (and have a sip of Coca Cola to refresh our mouths and our brains). We could say that it’s like the moment when, all sweaty and dusty, you sit by the side of the road and think things over (should I go down there or down there?). That’s why this show is called NOT TOO BAD (again).
Last time round the postcard was dedicated to Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. This time it had to be the same. Why? Well, I think a gallery (a real gallery) should be just like them.
Always on the wrong side of the powers that be. Always the same yet always different. Isn’t that what “ongoing” research means? Isn’t that the biggest transgression thing there is? And there is no one better than them to represent this idea (not least because they do so without distancing their audience through elitism). There are not many who have given serious thought to this idea ) perhaps only the remarkable Osvaldo Soriano in “Sad, Lonely and Final”). Two men sleeping together right in the middle of the rule of the Hays Code(sharing a bed like husband and wife, and often actually playing these roles – Stan as woman and wife and Oliver as man and husband, or vice versa); they systematically pulled the noses of the police and the powerful, sometimes even beating them up (do you remember James Finalyson ? the little, cross-eyed man with a moustache and top hat?); they carefully destroyed private property-the very basis of the American Way of Life. Do you remember? A perfect neighbourhood of white wooden houses, all perfect, with their perfect gardens and their perfect owners gazing happily out of their flower-covered windows……..until our two heroes turn up in dungarees, with ladders, hammers and nails. It’s not long before nothing is the way it was before.

If we could only be a little bit like them…
