Evaristo Petrocchi – Nell’immagine fonda

strisciata in questi casi tradisce l’intenzione e richiama l’evidenza sull’operazione compiuta
in tempi lontani. Ponendo in tempi lontani (talvolta appaiono infatti luoghi e date passate) ciò è
banalizzazione dell’evento fotografico.
apparenza.
The five books entitled “nell’immagine fonda”, “nell’immagine” "nel denso”, "nella forza"
8
and "rimuovendo nel denso") are not stories or novels or diaries but works that I produced in
the year 2009 to concentrate and expand, at the same time, the artwork in the unique context
of a "paper sculpture". A "microcosm" made of various materials, collage paintings, plastics,
industrial materials reprocessed and treated with gold, Armenian bole, oil, bitumen, and also felt,
leaves, flowers, gold, segments of re-elaborated photographic images, which I would describe
as "doped", painted, scratched and re-lived, drawings, tales, dates and places of past fictitious
events, literacy citations.
Actually they are key concepts that often recur in my works and in the images that I use (pieces
of photos, drawings, collages, clothes…) and that become so “fonde” (deep) because they are
characterized by some elements such as il denso, il povero, il forte, il ricco, il rimosso.
The denso is inhere in a material when it shows such a heavy presence of cultural elements that it
almost becomes a concentrate of culture and memory.
The ricco is what I really want to represent, that is to say that what is poor in the denso is, on the
contrary, extremely rich, because it is the real substance of the being and of the matter. What is
rich neither must be rich only by definition, nor it has to express a mere conceptual intuition: it has
to appear for what it is. Here comes the frequent use of gold and of gilded precious pieces such as
jewels.
The rimosso expresses the mental movement of an image or of a key concept in the work from one
place to another. The aim is to see the effect produced by the process of inversion. It is expressed
by the “strisciate” (smudges) of color, the scratches, from one side to the other. The scratch
in this cases betrays the intention and emphasize the process. It is a non conventional process,
because it does not draw the attention to what appears, the visible image decipherable only with
a magnifying glass, but to what this image unexpectedly hides. This process can be the simple
chemical reddening of the photo, treated with a diluent substance, or the abrasive effect that clouds
and ages the works placing them in far-off times. To place in far-off times (sometimes past places
and dates appear) what has been removed under the surface actually means to project it into the
future and into the immortality, because it means to take it away from the physical death as a
natural consequential fact.
Finally the “forza” (strength): a material becomes strong when, poor and dense, it is attacked and
worked in order to enhance all its cultural content. Then, so emptied and devoid of energy and of its
own substance, it seems to be exhausted and in this very moment I strengthen it with new life blood,
9
hypostasizing those lines of thought that the material represents and that have poor out from this
search of depth.
The cover of the books, as well as their “cases” are finely covered and treated with Armenian bole
and gold, ridges are made of tobacco leaf which still smell. In the centre of the “case” front there
are images of heads like ancient icons, symbols of knowledge, while in the middle of the cover of
each book there is a re-elaborated image of a women, belonging to the early twentieth century,
partly covered only by a small black square, and placed in a frame of photographic light blue
sky. The upper and lower part of the case are also light blue, symbolizing once again the sky, the
opening of the book to infinity.
The book “Nell’immagine fonda”, like the companion volumes, appears as an “old book", which
in reality bears witness to the contradictory actuality of the becoming in itself, which combines
stories and events about people never known. Stories sometimes abandoned or anyway considered
to have little cultural value: a foot, a leg, a slot from which one can see a city, a face divided into
two parts, hair like scratches on a photograph, an old woman coming out with an umbrella with
her hair touched up and scratched, a picture of an elegant gentleman divided into two segments
rearranged and placed in a frame of pressed grass and golden paint with some celestial exhibits of
industrial origin. Everything treated as precious gems, precious details of insignificant facts that
continue to live thanks to the fine ink drawings, landscapes, forests, meadows, mountains taken
from actual photographs but transformed into mysterious and unlikely places, delicate petals of
flowers, small golden exhibits such as jewellery, etc.
In such a context "reading" means to perceive images which live in the present and in the future
while finding their substance in the cultural "density" which has been forgotten in our times.
This book is a particularly delicate work, which has been technically designed and developed so
as to enable a vision and "reading" like any other printed book: hence it could be subject to wear
and tear if it were made available to the public as it is, without the due precautions.
It has, therefore, been considered appropriate that its direct vision to the public is permitted only
wearing special protective gloves and in the presence of an attendant.
10
"Nell’immagine fonda"
Video (2009)
(Duration 5.31 min)
The idea of the video comes from the need of making the books as "living" objects in a context
that seems to me the most natural such as the landscape and the nature surrounding the sites and
materials with which they have been largely realized - the landscape of that part of Umbria where I
live: the countryside of Assisi.
The books possess in fact an independent life due to the high concentration that they present of
elements of cultural "density".
The realization of the video focuses mainly on the books " nell’immagine fonda " and
“nell’immagine". In fact, one can see in the video two parts that one can recognize from the image
of the oak in the wind which is repeated twice and that shows, for both, their respective beginnings.
In the first part of the video one can follow the pages of the "nell’immagine" which I turn one after
another. In the second part, the pages of "nell’immagine fonda" are instead turned by themselves,
shaken by the wind.
In fact, I have left this book so delicate dangerously exposed to the wind and to the noise of the
leaves and trees, in order to observe - recording everything in the video, page by page - how it
reacted, how it moved, how one page could or could not turn or skip or appear depending on the
wind itself or on the light of the moment.
The first idea has been to arrange things in a way that one could hear the sounds of nature, the
rustling leaves of an oak or mulberry tree, sudden currents of air, the whistling wind, chirping of
birds, as constant background sounds that scans the pages, while are also flowing images of nearby
Mount Subasio and of the surrounding plain of Assisi. The result has been to make the picture
11
book "alive", full of spirit of nature, almost animated by an animistic or esoteric force.
The other intention was also to make people perceive the contamination of nature by modernity and
its inevitable merger with the former. Hence, I decided to introduce in the video soundtrack some
rock music in order to make the situation uneasy, portraying nature and the book deeply agitated
and restless in front of the becoming of things.
Eventually the sounds of wind and rock music result fused together and the outcome is that the
viewer has the feeling of entering into the book browsing the various images like floating on the
wings of the wind of music.
All begins with the image of an oak tree shaken by the wind in a windy and grey sky that creates an
atmosphere agitated, restless. Then the attention is focused on the "mysterious" object, the book,
which appears closed and placed on a soft black cloth. In the first pages two photographs appear,
a woman's leg with a painted shoe and an half face always belonging to a woman with an eye that
betrays restlessness. Her hair are actually scratches and abrasions on the photo, placed in a grey
sheet of common sandpaper, stained black. Flowing there are: a pastel portrait, seemingly a
reinterpretation of the same woman, an old photo negative painted and reworked, special
decorations softened and continued by thin traces of drawing, a countryside avenue of trees
placed on a sheet of blue plastic, treated, scraped and painted. On the opposite page appears a dry
orange flower of marshmallow, accompanied by an inscription: Paris 1718.
It also appears a mysterious profile of a face image in the frame of an old and stained fabric
while its "double" is painted on the opposite page in a lighter area. Finally, a flower leaf appears
before returning to the wind, and to the oak tree: so begins the second part of the video and the
pages this time, turn by themselves.
The end is a strong gust of wind that shakes in a single stroke the leaves of the mulberry tree and
then everything become quiet.
12
The gold
The need to enhance images and materials by the use of gold is expressed since ancient times with
different functions, all aimed, however, to draw attention to the “superior” value that they bear
above the human kind. Sacred and gold are often synonymous and confer a meaning, which is also
visible and apparent to a transcendental “substance" of which one can perceive only the religious
message, but which also need to be understood and proposed in a “vulgar” fashion.
Letting alone its religious and transcendental meanings, gold retains, however, its spiritual value
which laically can be traced back to the need to understand the absolute importance of something,
or someone, which would otherwise fall into everyday ordinariness. What is already "beautiful"
and has therefore an intrinsic value does not really need gold, which nevertheless expresses in such
a case a function of mere aesthetic appeal. A "beautiful" woman may wear golden clothes and
jewellery with the only purpose to show off her beauty.
But what has been forgotten or abandoned or simply unseen can be enriched with gold if one wants
to throw light on the "treasure" it hides, provided that there is a hidden treasure beyond aesthetics.
I believe that the use of gold in present time should be aimed at demonstrating the importance of
meanings which tend to be lost in the dialectic of social values which are commonly discussed:
i.e. appearance, success, prosperity, happiness, satisfaction, private life. Hence, a opposite use of
what is commonly expected from a precious material. Not to bring light on what already shines but
rather to throw light on the need to clarifying and penetrating in depth the humus of every day
life.
The materials I use are "poor" materials, like paper and
and then gently reassembled. Gold wraps them, in different forms, now more veiled, now more
aggressive and such wraps are sometimes wonderful naturalistic compositions, like olive leaves,
nuts, almonds, flowers, hollyhock, lavender, wisteria pods and pepper seeds.
industrial waste, fiercely abraded
But in such a process, the traces of which the same use of gold makes evident, the outcome
13
are photographic images improbable and mysterious, about events which have never happened
and which re-propose themselves in their absolute novelty and timelessness. The substance of
current events emerges from shadows thus reducing aesthetics to a purely instrumental fact: to
demonstrate the richness and density of the substance of things. Even the photographic image
that represents the essence of aesthetic excellence is reduced to "dense" material outcome of
unexpected results arising from corrosion through liquids and thinners which alter its physical and
functional characteristics.
The use of photography
The real dimension of art can not merely be the reproduction of an image which, however, is itself
subject to a process of natural ageing, and to become, sooner or later, a piece of paper yellowed by
time.
The erosion or oxidation of photographic material is part of history and it is generally regarded
as archaeology of a past event, to be treated and kept with care as an historical document.
This representation actually trivializes the message of oxidation making it purely a historical and
inevitable fact aimed to witness the inevitable decay in the use of photographic material. Not a
sheer coincidence that today, in practical life, we prefer to resort to technological tools in order to
sort, classify, and preserve information for posterity. Our archives are nowadays essentially virtual
and the original object “valuable”, in and for itself, is kept for the sole purpose of a possible and
hypothetical
The natural oxidation of the photographs is part of human history:
impressed nowadays to the evolution of human development induces to changing the rules as soon
as they are formulated, I believe it should be possible to produce also an artificial oxidation as a
result of sudden raids into the photographic image. In this context the acceleration reproduced
with an artistic goal on the photographic paper leads to a result not of forward development, but
but if the acceleration
14
of an anticipated return backward.
Facilitating this process means the exact opposite of an archaeological operation: it is not the
discovery of a distant past, it is not the finding of forgotten values, but it is rather its projection
into the future.
And in fact penetrating into the paper material of photography and its various components, we can
find colours never seen, freeing them from the forced compression of chemical aggregation in
which they are inevitably incorporated due to the physical conditions under which they were
created.
Such an operation is not really simple, even technically, since it presupposes in any case a certain
degree of uncertainty, being impossible to know in advance and with certainty what will be the final
outcome and the degree of oxidation reached. But it is a vital process if one wants to avoid the
trivialization of a photographic event.
This process which
photographs, belonging to the years from ‘800 to the early '900, highlights the clear anomaly of a
purely aesthetic use of photography. In reality, what has significance is what is inside the picture
rather than what is outside, what appears, what seems beautiful. However, I would never spoil the

With a difference that the material on which I intervene presents advantages: as it is not a trivial
copy. It should represent the original at its best. I research, therefore, beautiful portraits and old
photographs on which I intervene creating pathos and drama, as if trying to create anxiety, if not
sometimes alarm, on the depicted subject that often appears restless. The subject feels that is used
for ”stirring up the pot of its own substance” in order to see what comes out, which effervescent
humour emerges from its intimacy.
The environment which incorporates the outcome of this operation must be appropriate and should
highlight the distinction between a purely archaeological past and an unknown future. That future
is our challenge. Such a distinction emerges from the contrast between old photographic images

and pieces of new photographic materials combined in collages within the overall context of my works. The final result is the restlessness of images dislocated in different times, and projected into the future towards new projects: a message to investigate the substance of things rather than their banal ordinary appearance.

strisciata in questi casi tradisce l’intenzione e richiama l’evidenza sull’operazione compiuta
in tempi lontani.
However, I would never spoil the
original of a precious photograph, as I would never superimpose and intervene on the artwork of
another artist. But I could venture to penetrate his work after having reproduced it virtually, just
as a surgeon would practices a delicate operation on a dummy in order to ensure its success.
