Nell’ambito del programma espositivo che si propone di documentare le figure più
significative del panorama artistico ticinese contemporaneo, il Museo Cantonale d’Arte
dedica, a sette anni dalla morte, un’ampia retrospettiva all’opera di Rolando Raggenbass
(1950-2005).
Facendo seguito alla monografica dell’artista presentata nel 2002 dal Museo d’Arte di Mendrisio, che
aveva offerto uno sguardo sulla sua produzione degli ultimi anni, questa mostra antologica curata da Elio
Schenini, si propone di evidenziare la complessità di un percorso nel quale la pratica pittorica si è sempre
accompagnata ad un’intensa riflessione filosofica.
Pur riconoscendo l’importanza del pensiero nella ricerca di Raggenbass, l’esposizione, grazie alla quale,
per la prima volta, è possibile ammirare tutte le diverse fasi che hanno caratterizzato il suo lavoro, intende
però mettere al centro l’elemento visivo, seguendo un’indicazione dello stesso artista, per il quale infatti si
dipinge “più con le ossessioni che con le idee”. La dimensione “filosofica” dell’artista è comunque
documentata all’interno del percorso espositivo da una selezione di scritti e taccuini, che proprio in questa
occasione sono stati oggetto di uno studio i cui risultati sono raccolti in uno dei saggi pubblicati in
catalogo.
Iscrivibili in quel generale ritorno alla pittura che caratterizza i primi anni ottanta, gli esordi di Raggenbass
possono essere raccolti nella formula di NeoPop. Con leggerezza e ironia, nei suoi primi lavori oggetti
banali della società dei consumi sono avvolti in una dimensione intimistica e soggettiva che riflette lo
spaesamento dell’Io di fronte al declino delle grandi narrazioni. La diffidenza nei confronti del concetto di
avanguardia, testimoniato in numerosi scritti dell’artista, lo portano fin dagli esordi a guardare con
sospetto alle elaborazioni programmatiche collettive, per concentrarsi invece sulle esperienze di alcune
figure, che pur iscrivendosi nell’ambito della Pop Art, appaiono caratterizzate da una singolarità di ricerca
dalla forte impronta individuale, quali Jim Dine, Mario Schifano, David Hockney.
Nella seconda metà degli anni ottanta, la frammentazione e l’impossibilità della rappresentazione
diventano sempre più il tema di fondo dell’artista. Attraverso una pittura affidata ai gesti disarticolati delle
pennellate e al grafismo lineare di un segno sospeso tra disegno infantile e graffito, egli dissemina sulla
tela i brandelli di una narrazione che non può fare altro che mettere in scena la propria impossibilità. È
soprattutto alla pittura di Twombly che Raggenbass guarda in questi anni, mentre accanto a una
progressiva riduzione della paletta cromatica, ormai basata quasi unicamente sui marroni, gli ocra, i grigi,
i bianchi e i neri, assistiamo alla attenuazione figurativa dei segni, che non si lasciano più rinchiudere in
un senso, seppur frammentario e molteplice, ma che si dispiegano come pura dinamica differenziale.
Nel pieno di questa “estetica della differenza”, Raggenbass sente però la necessità di voltare pagina, di
intraprendere una nuova strada. Nelle opere che l’artista realizza tra il 1992 e il 1993 la superficie appare
sempre meno frammentata, mentre i segni si diradano sempre di più. In poco tempo alle tele sovraffollate
del periodo precedente fanno posto le tele dominate da tonalità chiare sulle quali si accampano poche e
isolate forme dipinte di grigio, di bianco o di nero, che sembrano vagamente rimandare a una dimensione
arcaica o a misteriose forme organiche. Se tutta la ricerca di Raggenbass si era finora mossa sulla
superficie, con i “Neri” realizzati verso la metà degli anni novanta sembra emergere la necessità di
andare in profondità. Come lastre radiografiche, questi grandi dipinti diventano il mezzo per verificare la
dimensione della corporeità, per accedere agli organi interni che costituiscono il “corpo vissuto”, in
contrapposizione al corpo “disorganizzato” teorizzato da Deleuze e Guattari. Ora però la superficie del
quadro è spesso costituta dalla trasparenza lattiginosa dei fogli di plastica sovrapposti gli uni agli altri,
mentre il nero lascia il posto all’organicismo delle macchie di colore rosso sangue che si raggrumano, si
espandono come frammenti di un corpo esploso. Il tema di una corporeità sviscerata, ormai sospesa tra
organico e inorganico, contro cui si infrange l’illusione della nostra identità, ma che rimane tuttavia il
sostrato indispensabile dell’essere, è l’ultimo lascito dell’opera di Raggenbass che si conclude infatti con
le incontenibili espansioni in poliuretano degli Elfimilza.
In occasione della mostra viene pubblicato un catalogo bilingue italiano/inglese con testi di Elio Schenini,
Fulvio Papi, Paola Tedeschi-Pellanda, Gianenrico Bernasconi e Virgilio Berardocco.
