Lia Cecchin – A bassa voce

(Stefano Coletto)

galleria upp is pleased to present A bassa voce (In a soft voice), Lia Cecchin's first solo exhibition.
An artist's work takes a part of a text, an object, a relationship out of reality and puts it all on a pedestal, adding something else, playing with a new point of view. It's an operation that produces and feeds on fiction; the initial recording never gives itself completely because the artistic intervention is nurtured by illusionistic mechanisms. The question is: why should we rely on this fiction and why should we write about it or enjoy it. There are some reasons. Believing in something that could be false might save us from experiences that could cause us physical harm. It satisfies the need to distract ourselves from pain or to sublimate it until we turn it into something else. It's the result of an empathy that makes us feel we've been heard, that we are actors in and recepients of the story we read and perceive. In a more radical way, we re-present our desire to understand, to reach a meaning. But if everything is based on fiction, the end of the story temporarily exorcizes the tension of the end: that death could be also be ours but, luckily, this time it's not.The exhibition tries to allude to these reasons on many different levels. Mapping out her plot, the artist cannot help but reflect upon the conditions that precede a possible work - repeating, simulating a wish.
Lia is shy. (Stefano Coletto)
