José Damasceno, Angela Detanico & Rafael Lain rappresentano il Brasile a Venezia

The artists José Damasceno and Detanico & Lain, collective formed by Ângela
Detanico and Rafael Lain, were chosen to exhibit their works in the Brazilian pavilion at
the 52nd Venice Biennial. Since 1993, the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo is
responsible for curating and organizing the exhibition at the Brazilian Pavilion in Venice
which, built in 1964, was one of the last spaces to be constructed in the Giardini. The
curator of the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, is curator of the
Brazilian representation.
The artists
José Damasceno was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1968, where he currently lives and
works. He held individual shows at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro and
the Museu Aloísio Magalhães, in Recife, both in 2001, and at the Centro Cultural São
Paulo the same year. The following year he was invited to the 25th São Paulo Biennial,
and in 2003 he showed his work at the 4a Bienal do Mercosul, in Porto Alegre. He
participated in the 51st Venice Biennial, invited by Maria de Corral for her L’esperienza
dell’arte, and participated in the group exhibition 10 anos de um novo MAM, also in
2005. He is represented by Galeria Fortes Vilaça in São Paulo.
Ângela Detanico was born in 1974 and Rafael Lain in 1973, both in Caxias do Sul.
Together they make up the collective Detanico & Lain and live between São Paulo and
Paris. They took part in the 27th São Paulo Biennial with a graphic project in the book
Como Viver Junto. They had individual shows in France in 2006 and 2005 and were
invited at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, in 2006; the 26th São Paulo Biennial and
the 3rd Media_City_Seoul, at the Seoul Museum of Art, in South Korea, in 2004; and
took part in the exhibition Imagética, in Curitiba, in 2003. They are represented by the
Galeria Vermelho in São Paulo.
The curator

and abroad, such as: Luz ao Sul (Valencia, Spain, 2007); Albano Alfonso e Paulo
Almeida, official Brazilian representation at the Bienal de Pintura de Cuenca (Ecuador,
2007), Double Meaning (Galeria Leme, São Paulo, 2005); Estratégias Barrocas - arte
contemporânea brasileira (Centro Cultural Metropolitano, Quito, Ecuador, 2004).
