STUDIO TRISORIO PRESENTA: BILL BECKLEY ELEMENTS OF ROMANCE. WORKS FROM THE SEVENTIES

Giovedì 21 gennaio, alle ore 19.00, presso lo Studio Trisorio, in via Riviera di Chiaia 215 a Napoli, sarà inaugurata la mostra di Bill Beckley Elements of Romance. Works from The Seventies.

Negli anni Settanta Bill Beckley è stato uno degli iniziatori e dei protagonisti del movimento della Narrative Art e membro del gruppo 112 Greene Street, nato in risposta al Minimalismo di Robert Morris, Carl Andre e Sol LeWitt. Ha utilizzato tecniche e materiali diversi associando sempre testi e immagini che in alcuni casi sono anche messi in relazione con azioni performative e installazioni.

Oltre a lavori storici come Myself as Washington (1969), Cake Story (1974), Paris Bistro (1975), Mao Dead (1976), Kitchen (1977), Deirdre’s Lip (1978), Shoulder Blade (1978), che possono essere considerati manifesti della Narrative Art, saranno in mostra acquerelli e studi preparatori.

Attraverso immagini di forte impatto visivo e testi iconici, ognuno di questi lavori apre il varco all’immaginazione conducendoci in un racconto che intreccia frammenti di esperienze e ricordi personali, stralci di Storia e altre narrazioni.

I lavori fotografici esposti sono gli ultimi esemplari realizzati con la tecnica di stampa cibachrome, oggi non più riproducibile, che Beckley ha scelto per la resa sensuale e splendente dei colori.

L’artista sarà presente all’inaugurazione.

La mostra si potrà visitare fino al 21 marzo 2016.

Biografia

Bill Beckley è nato ad Amburgo, in Pennsylvania nel 1946. Vive e lavora a New York. Ha esposto al MOMA, al Museo Solomon R. Guggenheim, al Whitney Museum of American Art (1979), a Documenta/Kassel (1976), alla Biennale di Parigi (1973) alla Biennale di Venezia (1975). Le sue opere sono nelle collezioni permanenti di istituzioni pubbliche e private in diverse parti del mondo: Museum of Modern Art di New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts di Boston, Tate Modern di Londra; Daimler Collection di Stoccarda, collezione Hoffman di Berlino, Morton Neumann Family Collection di Washington, collezioni degli artisti Jeff Koons e Sol LeWitt. È rappresentato in Italia dallo Studio Trisorio con cui collabora fin dal 1986, anno della personale Gardens of Pompeii. Un’opera della stessa mostra è attualmente esposta al Museo MADRE di Napoli.

Thursday, 21 January at 7 p.m. at Studio Trisorio in Riviera di Chiaia 215 in Naples, the Elements of Romance. Works from The Seventies exhibit by Bill Beckley will be inaugurated.

During the Seventies, Bill Beckley was one of the founders and protagonists of the Narrative Art movement and a member of the 112 Greene Street group which arose in response to the Minimalism of Robert Morris, Carl Andre and Sol LeWitt. He has always employed various techniques and materials in association with texts and images which, at times, have also been used in performances and installations.

In addition to historical works such as Myself as Washington (1969), Cake Story (1974), Paris Bistro (1975), Mao Dead (1976), Kitchen (1977), Deirdre’s Lip (1978), and Shoulder Blade (1978), considered veritable manifestos of Narrative Art, water-colours and preparatory studies will also be exhibited.

Through the use of images marked by a high visual impact and iconic texts, each of these works opens the gateway to our imagination and plunges us into a story which intertwines fragments of experiences, personal memories, historical excerpts and other narrations.

The exhibited photographic images are the most recent examples of the no-longer-in-use Cibachrome process which Beckley choose for its sensual rendering and purity of colour.

The artist will be present at the inauguration.

The exhibit will be held until 21 March 2016.

Biography

Bill Beckley was born in Hamburg, Pennsylvania in 1946 and lives and works in New York. He has shown at the MOMA, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art (1979), Documenta in Kassel, Germany (1976), the Paris Biennale (1973) and the Venice Biennale (1975). His works are in permanent public and private collections in various parts of the world: the Museum of Modern Art – New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Tate Modern in London; the Daimler Art Collection in Stuttgart, the Hoffman in Berlin, the Morton Neumann Family Collection in Washington and in the private collections of artists Jeff Koons and Sol LeWitt. In Italy, Beckley has been represented by Studio Trisorio since 1986, the year of his exhibit entitled Gardens of Pompeii. Another work from this series is on view at the MADRE Museum in Naples.
