Noire Gallery is pleased to announce Algorythm, the latest solo exhibition of Leonardo Mosso, a curious and
multifaceted personality, architect, artist, scholar and essayist of transformation processes and languages.
In the 50s he worked with Alvar Aalto becoming an equal collaborator for the works that the Finnish architect
designed in Italy. Many of his works are based on personal research conducted since the ‘60s on the design of
flexible, versatile structures with infinite possible transformations.
Algorythm presents an elaborate selection of eleven environment-structures consisting of wooden strips
held together by elastic joints. The study of shapes and their possible combinations is a theme that the
artist has developed over the years and that has characterized many projects. His structures become
systems of transformations, modular elements to be composed according to a combinatory logic.
In the exhibition the works invade the gallery environment and the viewer is invited to experience two parallel
spaces - the work and the drawing of its shadow on the wall.
In the text accompanying the exhibition, Barbara Brondi & Marco Rainò write: “... The structure-environments that
Mosso theorizes and creates from the 1960s onward - definitively artificial subjects that nevertheless represent codes
of identification, progression, and growth that can be found in nature - manifest themselves as gems of oriented
segments, frames of slats that branch out diversely to signal themselves through a presence that is both concrete
and abstract at the same time: bound to one another through the joints, these linear elements draw weightless
masses of filaments in the void, geometric efflorescences characterized by a dense transparency, clouds of vectors.
The exhibition is the second collaboration of Noire Gallery with the artist. The Centre Pompidou in Paris recently
acquired in its permanent collection a substantial nucleus of his works, the result of his personal reflections as
architect and artist, dedicating the solo exhibition to him.
