John Mackintosh Foot is Professor of Modern Italian History at
the University College London. Professor Foot received his
PhD. from the University of Cambridge in 1991, with a thesis
dedicated to the “Socialist movements in Milano during the
years 1914-1921”. He is co-editor of the periodical Modern Italy,
is member of the “Society for Italian Studies”, and is a reader
for Polity Press, Verso, Feltrinelli, Yale, UP and others. John
Foot is also member of an international jury for “La città di
città” set up by the Provincial Government of Milan.
John Foote's publications include Milan Since the Miracle
(2001), Pero: città di immigrazione (2002), Modern Italy (2003),
Disastro! Disasters in Italy Since 1860: Culture, Politics,
Society (with John Dickie e Frank Snowden) (2002) and his
well- known Calcio: a History of Italian Football, by now in its
fifth edition (2010).
Calcio is the first history of Italian soccer, and is based on a
wide variety of sources. As a cultural history, the book is
aimed at both a general and a specialised readership, and
covers every aspect of the sport, including politics, geography,
game tactics, the Italian national team, fans, scandals, foreign
players, and the mass media.
