European Sculpture: Difference and Diversity

Sculpture in Europe Today:
European Sculpture: Difference and Diversity
The concept sculpture has expanded in scope tremendously within the last fifty years. Various expressive ideas and actions within three-dimensional space are included under this term, such as performances, installations, Land Art, social and often architectonic interventions in space, as well. Under the title, “European Sculpture: Diversity and Difference” sculpture network, the European network for contemporary sculpture, reflects in an exhibition upon the various traditions and concepts of contemporary sculpture in Europe.
Some 150 artworks by over 30 artists from 10 different countries will be on show in the sculpture network members’ exhibition arranged in close cooperation with the cultural institution martin - Martini Arte Internazionale in the “Nave Gallery” in Grugliasco by Turin from the 16th of September through the 6th of November, simultaneously during the Turin Art Fair ARTISSIMA. From Iceland and Norway, via Great Britain and the center of Europe, down through the south to Spain and Italy, the selected works represent – aside from their esthetic and thematic aspects – also the high standard of craftsmanship in three-dimensional art today.
Next to constructivist work, conceptional and concrete artistic approaches, to include even naturalistic and figurative sculpture, are shown and related to one another within the room. Amorphous as well as geometric forms, the use of media such as film and photographic materials, processed synthetic materials and recycling products reflect contemporary work, just as does experimentation with the archaic materials of sculpture: stone, wood and metal. In ever more innovative use and combination, infinite variations seem possible. Thus the exhibition represents an overview of contemporary three-dimensional art. Here the development and tendencies in contemporary sculpture since the 1960’s are evident.
The exhibition is curated by Patrizia Bottallo (IT), and Artistic Director of the institution, martin Martini Arte Internazionale, Grugliasco. The idea was conceived of as a show for members of sculpture network, the European network for the advancement of contemporary sculpture. A selection of 30 artists from 10 different countries took part in the competition. Aside from Patrizia Bottallo (IT), members of the jury were the American art historian and curator of the Gori Collection, Pistoia (IT), Miranda MacPhail, Marc Wellmann, curator of the Georg Kolbe Museum, Berlin (D), and the Dutch sculptor, Auke de Vries, internationally known for his constructions in urban space such as the roof of the Daimler Building on the Potsdam Square in Berlin. A catalog of 98 pages will be published in both English and Italian including texts by the members of the jury. This catalog may be ordered through sculpture network at a price of € 10,-. .
