I just don’t know what to do with myself…

Per una visione veramente "cool" della cultura contemporanea non si può far a meno di notare che gli universi creativi di oggi (visivi, ma non solo) sono dominati da una fortissima presenza femminile. Alcuni degli album più belli usciti nel 2004 sono cantati e suonati da donne: la nuova scena elettronica berlinese di Miss Kittin, le acustiche sorelline americane Coco Rosie che hanno inciso a Parigi, Le Tigre, eredi del punk femminista…
E’ proprio Kathleen, una di loro, che in un’intervista ha dichiarato: "Se formi una girl-band solo come risposta ad un music business dominato dagli uomini, sei un cliché. Se invece lo fai per scoprire qualcosa, per comunicare qualcosa, per condividere il tuo entusiasmo vero, allora sei te stessa.".
Questo è il difetto di molte (troppe) mostre che fanno del genderism il loro problema principale. Rispetto alla musica, l’arte non sempre riesce a mantenere lo spirito indie, che sarà anche ruvido ma non è certo addomesticato.
Attraverso le opere di 14 artiste provenienti da tutto il mondo il curatore Luca Beatrice e Marella Arte Contemporanea hanno cercato nello spirito libero della creatività e della poetica femminile, lontani in egual misura dal sessismo e dal conformismo.
L’enigmatico titolo non è altro che l’inizio di una canzone dei White Stripes, un fantastico duo di Detroit (lui canta, lei suona le percussioni) che sintetizza al meglio lo spirito di questa mostra.
Mostra che, ci contiamo, chiude nel migliore dei modi il 2004, anno dedicato alla donna nell’arte.
Emmanuelle Antille (Losanna 1972, vive a Losanna). Ha rappresentato la Svizzera all’ultima Biennale di Venezia, presente nelle più importanti mostre internazionali recenti. Kiss and Shoot è un progetto del 2000 che comprende alcuni film girati in video e pellicola.
Delia Brown
(Berkeley, CA 1969, vive tra New York e Los Angeles) Il suo lavoro (pittura, foto, performance) utilizza immagini dalla cultura contemporanea secondo un grado di emotività che riguarda soprattutto il contesto dell’arte. Ha partecipato alla 1° edizione di Prague Biennale (2003).
Lyudmilla Gorlova
(Mosca, 1968, vive a Mosca) Lavora principalmente con video e fotografia, attraverso i quali sonda le trasformazioni sociali che caratterizzano la vita oggi in Russia. Di recente ha partecipato alla mostra Non toccate la donna bianca presso la Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo di Torino.
Tomoko Konoike
(Akita, 1960, vive a Tokyo). Nella sua poetica confluiscono l’elemento innovativo e tecnologico (rappresentato soprattutto nei video) e il forte legame con la tradizione del suo Paese attraverso la pittura e il disegno che contengono diversi elementi di classicità. Ha esposto quest’estate a Officina Asia (GAM, Bologna)
Liisa Lounila
(Helsinki, 1976, vive a Helsinki). Il suo immaginario è ricco di riferimenti al cinema, in particolare al noir che esalta in quadri dal senso ambiguo e inafferrabile. Anche i video (come Play o Pop Corn) raccontano di un universo sospeso e metafisico. Ha rappresentato la Finlandia nel Padiglione dei Paesi Nordici all’ultima Biennale di Venezia.
Michela Lorenzi
(Pavullo, 1975 vive a Serramazzoni, MO). I suoi lavori (dipinti e disegni) affrontano in maniera ironica e disincanta il tema della seduzione attraverso una serie di felicci dell’immaginario sensuale come le scarpe rosse. Ha di recente partecipato a Base Camp al Kunst Merano (2004)
Hilla Lulu Lin
(Tel Aviv, 1964, vive a Tel Aviv) Erede di una performance molto aspra e realistica, porta alle estreme conseguenze l’indagine sui confini del corpo: la manipolazione personale diventa esperienza condivisa e politica. E’ stata invitata alla mostra Seven Sins al Museion di Bolzano (la sua opera è sulla copertina del catalogo).
Alisa Margolis
(Amsterdam, 1976, vive ad Amsterdam) I suoi dipinti derivano dalle metamorfosi barocche e del gotico floreale, influenzati dai film di Dario Argento e da Poltergeist, mescolando paesaggio e bellezza, decorazione e "gore". Espone per la prima volta in Italia.
Dawn Mellor
(Manchester 1970, vive a Londra). Soggetti dei suoi quadri sono le celebrities della cultura di massa e dello shobiz, una sorta di galleria sul femminile contemporaneo, ricco di fascino e di perversione. Ha esposto più volte alla Victoria Miro Gallery di Londra.
Audrey Nervi
(Lyon, 1974, vive a Parigi). La sua pittura è una sorta di diario di bordo della sua vita, dei suoi interessi che prendono forma sia nell’osservazione della realtà sia nel corso di viaggi. In mostra tele della serie I’m not a Gringo, realizzate in Messico nel 2001 e la più recenti ZAT che documentano uno scenario rave. Espone per la prima volta in Italia.
Shinako Sato
(Fukuoka, 1965, vive Tokyo). Le sue sculture sono oggetti che ricordano l’immaginario giapponese della cultura manga, nel cinema e nel fumetto, attualizzato nel contatto con la realtà quotidiana di cui diventano uno specchio rivelatore. Ha tenuto nel 2002 la sua prima personale italiana alla Galleria Marella.
Dana Schutz
(Livonia, USA, 1976, vive a New York) Rivelazione all’ultima Biennale di Venezia e alla 1° Prague Biennale, i suoi quadri sono ricchi di simboli della cultura giovanile, in particolare in campo musicale, ma con altrettanti rimandi in direzione della pittura surrealista.
Iris Van Dongen
(Tillburg, 1975, vive tra Berlino e Rotterdam). I suoi quadri attualizzano i temi romantici legati all’inquietudine della figura femminile, che sembrano angeli della morte idealmente trasposte da fine ‘800 alla black culture del nuovo millennio. Ha partecipato a Expander alla Royal Academy of Arts si Londra e lavora con la Galerie Diana Stigter di Amsterdam.
Sophie Von Hellerman
(Munich, 1975, vive a Londra). Nei dipinti e negli acquerelli combina riferimenti colti alla storia dell’arte con elementi della cultura di massa in una rappresentazione narrativa e sensibile. Espone con Marc Foxx a Los Angeles, Vilma Gold e Saatchi Gallery a Londra e qui per la prima volta in Italia.
