“The thin layer of tissue forming the natural outer
covering of the body of a person or animal.”
Dictionary Definition of Skin
The skin is the largest organ of the body, with a total area of about 20 square feet; it protects from microbes and the elements, helps regulate body temperature, and permits the sensations of touch, heat, and cold.
Iris Richardson’s recent research explores metaphors connected to skin through working with a series of close shots of peels and vegetable films. The macro images she photographs have a shallow depth of field, allowing only a fraction of the organic skins to be in focus. This process removes the original identity, making it unrecognizable. The following step is to peel away the printed images from their original support, the paper, turning them back into skin again. The outcome is an ambiguous and transparent surface, suspended between the scientific sample and a pictorial dimension of photography.
The surfaces, disembodied from their original identity, represent a contestation of society with its rules, laws and expectations imposed on contemporary subjectivities. The fabric of human existence is built on this structure, which has been in place for so long that it is difficult to change despite its obvious faults. None of the labels change the basic fact that the common connection between all living things is skin.

She is currently attending SACI Florence working towards her M.F.A. in studio arts. WORK(IN)SPACE is a series of exhibition projects by SACI 2nd-Year MFA in Studio Art candidates, as part of the Professional Practicum Seminar. Students work directly in SACI's Maidoff Gallery to critically engage with the challenges offered by preparing an exhibition. Each week, a new opening presents a coherent body of work of the artists. Working one-on-one with SACI Instructors Daria Filardo and Pietro Gaglianò, students step outside of their studio environment to rethink their work in an exhibition setting, learning to consider all the aspects, limitations, and needs of the given space to achieve the best final result.
WORK(IN)SPACE is held in SACI’s Maidoff Gallery and includes all phases of the exhibition, from the planning to the installation and opening of the show.
SACI's Maidoff Gallery Via Sant'Egidio 14 Gallery Hours: M-F 9 - 7pm / S-S 1 - 7pm
