Il ciclo di morte e vita, di crescita e decadenza, prezioso e senza valore, rizomatico e binario sono le tematiche che Julia Bowden esplora nella sua mostra, Resti Della Natura.
The cycle of life and death, growth and decay, precious and worthless, rhizomatic and binary are all conversations Julia Bowden explores in her recent exhibition, Resti Della Natura.
Julia explores the philosophy of nature through its rhizomatic or binary growth, within the gal- lery “white cube”. Questions are asked such as: What is nature? What is our relationship to it? How can nature grow in the contemporary world and in the gallery space?
Iterations of a seed are exposed through transparent layered drawings, allowing the viewer to see how it would grow rhizomatically, or without a common origin. Seeds spreading out, growing in a seemingly chaotic yet systematic order, similar to grass, take over each drawing, limited only by the size of the paper. Sealed together with resin, the drawings will eventually deconstruct and crumble over time. The illustration of growth is tied to its ultimate decomposition.
Diversely, the binary growth represented in the bronze and natural branches refer to previous life, an homage to its past. In an experimental process, the artist casts the bronze by burning away the branch, making the sculpture the only remainder of the decaying branch. The white frames function as extensions of the gallery wall, while the bronze and natural branches weave in and out of the space. The quiet solitude of the white cube, the international de nition of a gallery space, does not stop nature from slowly moving in. The replacement of a semi precious material for an organic branch that would eventually rot away, encourages the viewer to ques- tion what is precious about dying nature, if anything at all.
WORK(IN)SPACE is a new series of exhibition projects by SACI 2nd-Year MFA Candidates in Stu- dio Art, as part of the Professional Practicum Seminar. Students will work directly with SACI’s Maidoff Gallery to critically engage with the challenges offered by preparing an exhibition. Each week a new opening will present a coherent body of work of the artists. Working in a one-to-one relationship with SACI Instructors Daria Filardo and Pietro Gaglianò, students will step outside of their studio environment to rethink their work in an exhibition setting, learning to consider all the aspects, limitations and needs of the given space to achieve the best nal result.
WORK(IN)SPACE will be held in the Maidoff Gallery and will include all phases of the exhibition, from the planning, to the installation and the opening of the solo show. Visitors are invited to attend the opening of the exhibitions, or visit during opening hours.
