Vincenzo Amato / Simone Pontecorvo
sculture e acquerelli
Comunicato stampa
Segnala l'evento
Colour is what Vincenzo Amato’s sculptures and Simone Pontecorvo’s watercolours have in common. They are on display together from 1st March at the “Il Gabbiano” Art Gallery.
It is his debut for Pontecorvo, while for Amato it is his second exhibition at the Gabbiano, after the first one in 1996.
In these ten years Amato’s iron sculptures have undergone a radical transformation; after exalting the beauty of rust, the artist today proposes six monochrome works using paint for automobiles.
Vincenzo Amato was born in 1966 in Palermo, where he did his classical studies. At the age of twenty he transferred to Rome and then in 1993 he moved to New York where he now lives and works. In America he has collaborated with the Campbell Iron Works, with Jim Dine and with Clarissa Chryssa. Since 1988 he has displayed his works at the Earl McGrath Gallery in New York and Los Angeles.
In Italy his sculptures have been presented at the Naviglio in Milan and at the Zisa in Palermo. Apart from sculpture, Vincenzo’s interests take in the theatre and the cinema. He has animated his iron puppets in “The Iliad in Thirty Minutes” and has acted in “24 Plays” in New York. We also find him in the films of Emanuele Crialese, including “Respiro” (2001) which has been distributed worldwide.
Simone Pontecorvo is exhibiting for the first time sixteen water-colours, both large and small, on Japanese rice paper.
Born in Rome in 1975, from his earliest years he always had a passion for drawing and painting. He took lessons from Primarosa Cesarini Sforza, the artist, who taught techniques of sculpture and painting to children, also providing them with materials and leaving them to express themselves freely.
In his father Gillo’s school he worked as assistant director on seven full-length and four short films. After which he preferred to devote himself to painting. He exhibited in collective shows at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs’ circle in 1997, at the Prati Institute in Rome (Trastevere) in 2003 and in the social venture called “Indelible Ink”, held at the end of 2003 in the “m.a.c.r.o.” (slaughterhouse) in Rome.
