Workshop. The thinking hand
workshop tenuto dall’artista finlandese Satu Kiuru, basato sulla connessione tra pensiero, arte e filosofia con riferimento alle teorie dell’architetto finlandese Juhani Pallasmaa
Comunicato stampa
Segnala l'evento
The thinking hand, practice based work shop in Rome 19. – 20.5.2011
(group size: 8-10 person)
Leader: Satu Kiuru, visual artist and artistic researcher from Finland (University of Design and Arts of Helsinki)
As a visual artist I am interested in tacit knowledge, because in artistic working our "know how" is based primarily on using our all-embracing bodily understanding without the need of a linguistic decoder. In my own artistic activities I have discovered that the working process itself produces knowledge that might be otherwise unavailable. Knowledge is not moving in one direction only, from the thinking head to the drawing hand. Via concrete artistic working we can perceive and understand things the conscious mind is not yet able or willing to reveal.
As The Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa has said:
”The only way to get knowledge about creative processes is to try to understand the basis of creativity: those irrational, freely connected phenomena that the articulated consciousness on the surface cannot discover.”

Artistic thinking and creation do not follow each other in a given order, they overlap both in time and in activities during the whole artistic process. ”As a matter of fact we are not dealing with a directly proceeding creative process, the question is, instead, of different contemporaneous series of events, interconnected with each other during the whole creative process” says the architect Juhani Pallasmaa in his book Maailmassaolon taide (The Art of Being in the World).
