That’s the right occasion to deepen the study of his aesthetic evolution together with his extraordinary work.
Caravaggio is one of those sublime artists, whom talent and whom work represent a milestone in the history of the worldwide aesthetic. Just few artists played such a great role in the history of art.
It’s easy to recognize his unmistakable style and his personality.
The critics still disagree about the cultural milieu where the genius of Caravaggio grew.
Was Caravaggio influenced by Giorgione or by the lombard aesthetics of the las two decades of the Sixteenth Century?
The most recent studies about Milanese painting – studies accompanied by a great campaign of restorations – show how the dilemma is more apparent than real.
The Lombard and the Venetian milieu were strictly linked together: ideas could circulate easily.
Furthermore, is now clear that Caravaggio arrived in Rome in 1592, so he was 21 and he wasn’t a kid, but an artist with his personality.
So, why the dilemma?
Because whe know just little about Caravaggio’s youth.
Until 1974, the place and date of birth of Caravaggio were unknown. Nowadays, we know more about his life. And this is evident in the exhibition at the «Accademia di Carrara».
Eighteen works by Caravaggio are exposed together with twenty two canvases painted by artists (Alessandro Bonvicino detto il Moretto, Giovan Battista Moroni, Lorenzo Lotto, Giovan Gerolamo Savoldo…) that he knew and that influenced his style.
The exhibition compares the singularity of the genius and the plurality of the influences. Caravaggio will amaze you once again.
This exhibition, born as a tribute to Gian Alberto Dell’Acqua – who was the curator of the magnificent exhibition of 1951 – take the point on the evolution of the critics. A «pretext» to admire the art of one of the genius of the painings.
