I Royal art Lodge da Perugi a Padova

La Royal Art Lodge è un affiatato gruppo di tre artisti canadesi: Marcel Dzama, Michael Dumontier e Neil Farber. Tutti e tre portano avanti una carriera solista fortunata e ricca di riconoscimenti internazionali, ma il mercoledì sera si ritrovano nel medesimo studio per lavorare assieme.
Dopo anni di ricerca sul disegno e sul video – il gruppo si è costituito a Winnipeg nel 1996 e la formazione originaria constava di cinque elementi – la Royal Art Lodge è passata alla più “auratica” di tutte tecniche delle arti visive: la pittura. La personale presso la galleria Perugi di Padova, la seconda dopo quella del 2002, presenta una serie di ottanta piccoli dipinti su tavola, dal titolo Pensieri dei serpenti.
Ogni lavoro è il frutto dell’apporto di tutti e tre e viene eseguito in un clima di assoluta libertà di associazione, con noncuranza di oltrepassare la soglia della stramberia e dell’assurdità. Comunque vi si riconoscono motivi ricorrenti: molti dipinti presentano un soggetto solitario, spesso una giovane donna o un bambino, meno spesso un uomo. Intorno è come se si materializzasse il loro indecifrabile flusso di coscienza, che fa sfilare davanti ai nostri occhi strane creature, quali mostri e animali dall’aspetto fiabesco, ma da favola triste, di quelle che alla fine fanno piangere. Tra i temi, spicca quello della morte, un archetipo potentissimo, trattato con lo humour malinconico che da sempre caratterizza i lavori della Royal Art Lodge. The Royal Art Lodge is a tightly knit group of three Canadian artists: Marcel Dzama, Michael Dumontier and Neil Farber. All three have achieved success as individual artists with substantial international recognition, but every Wednesday they meet in the same studio to work together. After years working with drawing and video- the group was formed in Winnipeg in 1996, originally with five members- the Royal Art Lodge has now moved onto the most “sanctified” of all the techniques of the visual arts: painting.
pensieri dei serpenti is the second solo show at the galleria Perugi in Padua following the first in 2002. The exhibition presents a series of eighty small paintings on panels. Each work is the result of the contribution of all three artists and has been undertaken in an atmosphere of absolute freedom of association, with no concern for going beyond the limits of weirdness and absurdity. Nonetheless we can recognise recurrent elements: many paintings present a single subject: often a young woman or a child, less often a man. Around them it is as if their indecipherable stream of conscience was materialising, which shows us a parade of strange creatures such as monsters and animals as if from fairy tales, but from sad tales, from those which make us cry at the end. The powerful archetype of death is one theme which stands out, but treated with the melancholic humour which has always characterised the Royal Art Lodge. The show is curated by Guido Bartorelli.
